LCC nonprofit class notes

the one class of the few we've had that i went to, here are some notes

the day's discussion was about:

1. the president/executive director, the board in general, the org.

2.defining roles, understanding mission, feedback mediums, sharing expectations

3. the board is supposed to create acceptable communication protocols for the org

the 'hourglass form' of an org looks like an hourglass. wide at the tops and bottoms, while bottlenecked in the center. at the top you have the board, in the center you have the president/e.d., and at the bottom you have the staff.

*prudent communication results in the board communicating matters to the president, who consults the e.d., who then informs the staff, and like wise. staff consults the e.d. who converses w/ the president,who reports to the board.

when we are 501-3-c officially, we will be called a 'policy making' board. we are currently what is called a 'administrative board' one in which makes all decisions, etc. a 3rd board, called an 'advisory board' , is an outside collective of people who might have opinions or advice to recommend to the board. these are found in conjuction to 'policy boards'

SOME AREAS HEM NEEDS FOCUS

*we needsome help in the area of HR. this position will serve the org in matters of recruiting, recognizing, and opportunities to grow.if/how we use volunteers, how are they treated/recognized?

*the executive director needs a review every 1-2 years or when called for.

*planning-setting mission,philosophy,goals(short/long term),services offered,evaluating on regular basis

*finance-budget development,approval/review,financial accountability,fundraising, managing/maintaining assets

*community relations-assuring services meets clients needs, marketing, PR/action in he community

*organizational operations-ensure systems are adequate, appropriate/legal
